In modern high-tech industries, companies are increasingly relying on complex teams to complete critical projects. The success of SCM cross-functional teams has a direct effect on critical initiatives, such as gross margin improvements, inventory levels, and material cost savings. SC teams can no longer work in silo's, since today's organizations rely heavily on cross-functional input for business decisions. This evolution from silo to cross-functional decision making has placed greater importance on SC organization's excelling at working cross-functionally. Contemporary research shows a significant number of companies have failed at cross-functional implementations, with less than 30% of companies reporting having achieved a fully integrated SC. SC organizations report focusing on "navigating the waters of their own harbor" instead of on improving cross-functional interactions. A common reason given for lack of cross-functional success is the difficulty of knocking down the walls between departments, to create seamless interactions.  Successful SC cross-functional teams should not be taken for granted; this raises the question, what differentiates these teams from other team's that fail?

At the core of cross-functional teams are people, relationships, influencing each other. Leadership, broken down to its simplest form, is people gaining direction, alignment, and commitment from others. Modern leadership theories propose moving away from the traditional views of Leadership as a top's-down process, instead prescribing multiple people to provide leadership, and is often what happens in successful team environments. Although modern Leadership theories have gained traction in other fields, very little discussion of this is taking place within SC organizations, which are still focused on Traditional leadership theories from the 1970-1980s.

This presentation will review traditional theories on leadership, followed by modern theories of leadership, and examples of the impact of successful leadership in high-tech cross-functional teams. 

Keynote Speaker

Andrea Abegg,
Director of Global Logistics, Fitbit

As Director of Global Logistics at Fitbit Andrea manages all aspects of Postponement/Pack-Out, Fulfillment, Transportation, Distribution Center Management, Global Trade Compliance, and Returns Management. Prior to joining Fitbit Andrea had roles at Intel, Gallo, Apple, Intermec and Amazon. These roles spanned Procurement, Freight Security, New Product Project Management, and Logistics. Career accomplishments include managed logistics & fulfillment for a Start-Up during 150% unit sales growth 1st year, and achieving 25% YOY Logistics Cost savings (Fitbit), Warehouse / Distribution center Global Strategic Transformations (Intermec, Fitbit) and assuming Transportation responsibilities for all aspects of a high volume / high value CPU manufacturing site (Intel). 

Andrea holds a B.A in Supply Chain Management, and an MBA from Arizona State University. 

Andrea is currently a 3rd year Doctoral researcher at Cranfield School of Management (UK). Andrea’s research explores modern theories of Leadership within Supply Chain Organizations. The aim of this research is to contribute to the body of academic knowledge related to Leadership in Supply Chain Management.
